XII.

Lukian leapt out of bed, stumbling to pull up his underwear as he approached the door. A nerve in his stomach trembled and a cold sense of dread swept over his body. “Sven, who?”

“I don’t know. Some impatient, stony-eyed broad.” Sven lowered his voice, speaking with his face pressed against the other side of the door. “Can’t understand what the fuck she wants. I don’t like her.”

Naoko sat up in bed, alerted by the conversation. “A broad?”

Lukian raised his hands, backing away from her stare. “No idea.”

He cracked open the door and peered into common area of the flat: a tall woman in a white blazer stood in the entrance to his house, clutching an electronic clipboard and a black, leather handbag. The glittering black jewels on the purse matched the twinkling black rhinestones in her belt. The faceted onyx bracelets matched the audacious rocks, black like death, around her fingers—cold, mechanical fingers that—

Lukian slammed the door, his barricade between worlds, and sank against it. “Shit.” He looked to the ceiling for answers, and found none.

“Lukian, what’s going on? Who’s there?” Swathed in blankets, Naoko scooped her clothes from the floor and dressed. “Anyway, it’s probably best if I go.”

“You’re not going anywhere.” Lukian raised his hands and forbade her exit. “Wait here.” He kept a low voice, glancing constantly over his shoulder at the door, dreading the monster lurking on the other side. He slipped into his pants and fumbled with the drawstring, unable to button the rent fly that hung wide open.

“Wait for what?” Her voice increased in volume and frustration. Naoko sat in bed and tossed aside the blankets. “Lukian, what’s going on?”

“Just—Shh—” He darted across the floor and sat beside her, placing a finger over her lips. “Trust me for a minute.” He looked to the door, sucking in a deep breath. “Don’t make a sound.”

“Trust you for what?” She put her hands on her hips. “Am I allowed to leave, or am I your prisoner?”

He bit his lip, mind racing to find the right words. “It’s because—What happened was—” He leaned his head against the bed and groaned with frustration.

“Explain it to me now.” She stood up. “Or I’m out.”

“It’s complicated, Nao!” He glanced at the door. “I don’t have time. But it’s dangerous. You can’t go out there. It’s—my fault. The whole thing is my fault and I never should have called you—”

“What kind of danger?” She tugged her hand away. “You shouldn’t have called me?” Her upper lip curled. “What are you—”

“That woman outside is more dangerous than you could possibly imagine.” He put his hands on her shoulders. “You need to hide, and be perfectly quiet. I will go and deal with her. But if she sees you, Nao, it’s over. You’re fucked. Don’t let her know you’re here. Don’t do anything to draw attention to yourself. Become invisible.”

“This is crazy.” She stood up, straightened her dress, and tied up her hair. “I have to go now. Lukian, it was great, but things got a little too weird for my tastes.
